What is Kalshi and how does the prediction market work?

Kalshi is a US exchange operated by Kalshi Inc., founded in 2018, where users trade yes/no contracts on the outcome of real-world events. The exchange entity behind the contracts is KalshiEX LLC, so the Kalshi prediction market is built like a financial exchange rather than a bookmaker.

The idea is simple: you buy a "yes" or "no" position on a question, and the contract settles when the event resolves. Markets are not limited to one subject; the search interest around Kalshi World Cup and Kalshi Ballon d'Or contracts shows how sport-related questions attract attention, though the operator's market list for India is not something we can confirm, because Indian access is restricted (see below).

Accounts need a minimum deposit of 10 INR at account level, while the debit card route has its own $10 minimum. The platform has a native app for iOS and Android, and the App Store rating is 4.8/5. See the app page for installation details.

No. Kalshi holds no licence valid in India, and Indian law currently prohibits prediction-market style trading, so the answer to "is Kalshi legal in India" is no for residents.

Two separate barriers apply. First, the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act (PROGA) 2025 ban has been in force since May 1, 2026, and MeitY issues blocking orders under Section 69A that Internet providers carry out. Second, Kalshi's own member agreement, dated June 17, 2026, restricts India, so there is no working sign-up route. Anyone asking whether Kalshi is available in India should read it as: restricted by the operator and prohibited by law.

A VPN does not fix this. Masking your location breaches the member agreement and does not make the activity lawful, and funds could be frozen with no recourse. We do not recommend it.

Is Kalshi gambling or betting?

Kalshi describes itself as an exchange run by KalshiEX LLC, but for Indian law purposes that label offers no protection: outcome-based real-money contracts fall under the prohibitions the PROGA 2025 ban targets.

The gambling-versus-trading debate is real in the US, where the CFTC framework treats these contracts as derivatives. In practice, though, users still stake money on uncertain outcomes, which is why searches such as "Kalshi betting" and "is Kalshi gambling" are so common. The minimum age is 18+. Indian residents should treat it as off limits regardless of the wording.

Regulated by the CFTC: what the licence means

Kalshi's authority is the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) – Designated Contract Market status, which covers trading on the exchange in the United States. It is verifiable on the CFTC's public register of designated contract markets.

For Indian residents it means very little. The CFTC does not license operators for India, and the brand holds no licence valid for this market, so you would have no Indian regulator to complain to. US oversight also does not override the Indian ban or the June 17, 2026 restriction. Connections use SSL/TLS 256-bit encryption, which protects data in transit but is not a legal safeguard.

The same applies if you compare Kalshi vs Polymarket: both are restricted or blocked for Indian users, so neither is a workable choice from India.

Is Kalshi legit or a scam?

Kalshi is a real, CFTC-regulated US exchange, not a scam in the fraud sense, but its Trustpilot score is a weak 2.5/5 (384 reviews), and it is not legitimate for use from India.

Against that, the App Store rating sits at 4.8/5, so experience clearly varies between channels. A 2.5 average on Trustpilot signals recurring complaints, and anyone considering the platform should weigh that. Our two main criticisms: no route for Indian users at all, and USD-only handling that adds conversion friction for anyone outside the US.

Funding and cashing out in brief

Kalshi lists three funding methods, and card withdrawals are stated to take hours. Everything below applies to eligible non-Indian users only; details are on the payments page.

  • Debit card: $10 minimum deposit; card withdrawals take hours.
  • Wire transfer: listed as an accepted method.
  • Crypto: listed as an accepted method.

No withdrawal times are published for wire or crypto. Bonus and promo details are US-only and are not available to Indian residents; see the bonus page. For help, use the channels on the contacts page. If gambling is causing you harm, contact Gamblers Anonymous India or a local counselling service.
